Begin with the search foundations.
Google's current guidance keeps SEO fundamentals central to generative AI search. Check indexing and snippet eligibility, useful content and the property's Search generative AI inclusion setting. A technically eligible page is not guaranteed to appear.
For a service business, the distinctive information is often the actual delivery process, scope and evidence behind the offer. Start there. A new page that restates generic industry advice may add less value than a precise explanation missing from an existing service page.
Make the answer easy to understand.
State the subject clearly, answer the main question and use headings that follow the reader's decisions. Explain unfamiliar terms. Add examples when they resolve ambiguity, and link claims to sources where that helps the reader judge them. A clear definition or concise answer is valuable because it helps comprehension, not because a certain paragraph length guarantees an AI citation.
Keep structured data consistent with the page.
Use appropriate markup to describe the organisation, service, breadcrumb or article the reader can actually see. Structured data is a description of the content, not a place to hide extra claims or keywords. A valid schema test does not prove ranking or citation eligibility. Google says no special AI schema or machine-readable AI file is needed for its AI Search features.
Use the current report, and keep its scope clear.
Google now documents a Generative AI performance report in Search Console for impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. It supports page, country, device and date views. Treat those impressions as their own evidence, not as a complete record of clicks, conversions or citations across every AI provider.
Google states that the report rolled out worldwide by 31 August 2026, while its help page also lists limited impressions or availability as reasons a report may not appear. Check the actual property and disclose gaps. Do not infer an AI appearance from a change in ordinary Web CTR.
Illustrative investigation: if a page gains AI impressions, record the period and filters, inspect whether the page changed and compare like-for-like observations. That movement alone does not establish which edit caused it or whether enquiries improved.
Read the current report definitionsCheck inclusion controls separately from content quality.
Search Console has a Search generative AI control for including or excluding a site from supported features. A property may inherit its parent's choice. Verify the actual setting before diagnosing missing visibility as a writing problem.
This control is different from blocking indexing or controlling AI training. Changing it is an owner decision, not something a content review should do silently.
Read Google's inclusion-control guidanceUse the evidence to choose the next improvement.
If the page is inaccessible, address that first. If the explanation is incomplete, improve the answer and its evidence. If readers arrive but cannot understand the offer, investigate the page experience. These are different problems. The goal is a page that serves a real need and can be discovered through relevant search experiences.
